I have to weigh in on the state of affairs of the Democratic party and all this bickering about race and gender. First let me say this: I am in full support of Barack Obama. I believe that he is the candidate who has the ability to bring a fresh new perspective on policy and procedure in Washington. It has been stated over and over that he is too inexperienced to lead this country. I strongly disagree with this sentiment. I believe that he is qualified to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. I believe he has the judgment to appoint the right people to his cabinet and that he has the personality to unite the parties. Nowhere is it written that the qualifications for President is to have a certain number of years in the Senate. As it is stated in the Constitution, the only qualifications are that he or she be a natural-born citizen of the United States, be at least 35 years of age, and have resided in the United States for at least 14 years, period!!! If there was a dire need to have years and years of experience, I believe it would have been stated. The real meat of the argument, for me, resides in the fact that he, the President, is advised on just about every aspect of the departments he oversees. Congress gets to scrutinize much of what the President emits from his office, as well as the people he serves if they chose to do so. (This is called the Freedom of Information Act)
So, in my opinion, I think that Barack Obama is highly qualified to lead this country and I believe he is sincere in his efforts to unite the parties and change some of the negative perceptions of America held by others in this world. As an African-American women, I hold dear the HOPE that Barack gives me. Hope for this country, hope for being seen as an equal and hope for what I, as an African-American, can actually achieve in this country. Before now, before his candidacy, I did not have the faith in this country that African-Americans would ever be seen (inside and out of the country) as anything but what is portrayed to the world through various media outlets. I am in the hope that if Barack can become president, then maybe this country has a unique opportunity to show the world that inspite of the injustice they have inflicted on its own citizens, we can overcome. This may give hope to other ethnicities throughout the world that we are capable of treating them with the same respect we ourselves would want.
Barack is a leader and i believe this to be the fundamental difference between him and Hilary. Hilary is great at what she has done, dealing with healthcare reform and such, BUT i don't believe that this experience translates into the leadership quality that our next President must posses. And at this, BARACK IS A NATURAL.....
